Composer AR Rahman Biography AR Rahman was born as AS Dilip Kumar in Chennai on January 6, 1967, he came to be known as AR (Allah Rakha Rahman) after converting to Islam. His father, who worked as a musician and conductor, died when AR Rahman was young resulting in a difficult childhood for AR Rahman. When he was 11 years old, he joined the troupe of the famous South Indian musician Ilayaraja. He later graduated from Trinity College, Oxford University with a degree in Western Classical Music. His lucky break came when he was asked by the famous director to compose music for his film Rosa in 1991. Roja's music went on to make waves and since then there was no looking back. Rahman went on to hit Bombay, Kadhalan, Indira, Minsar Kanavu, Muthu Aur Luv Pakshi, Swades, Rang De Basanti and Guru among many others.  

        His music was very different from the rest of the pack. She made her Bollywood debut with the film Rangeela directed by Ram Gopal Varma. He has worked with all the major directors in Bollywood as well as South Indian film industry. He has won international acclaim. He composed the score and soundtrack for the 2003 Chinese film Warriors of Heaven and Earth. Renowned international composer Andrew Lloyd Webber hired Rahman to compose music for his first stage production Bombay Dreams in 2002. He is a recipient of the Padma Shri. Over the years Rahman has had the distinction of working with some of the finest personalities in the Indian entertainment industry like Javed Akhtar, Mehboob, Gulzar, Vairamuthu, Anand Bakshi, Wali and PK Mishra. Rahman's studio, Panchathan Records Inn was inaugurated in 2005 and is regarded as one of the finest of its kind in Asia with respect to instruments and overall development. KM Music, AR Rahman's personal music label was launched in 2006 . Its first release was the music of Sillunu Oru Kaadhal composed by Rahman himself. He has also been involved in several prestigious international projects including Elizabeth: Golden Age, which was directed by Shekhar Kapur in 2007. Rahman also composed music for Slumdog Millionaire in 2008. This work brought him two Oscars and a Golden Globe. The music was extremely popular, with Jai Ho reaching number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 on the Eurocurt Hot 100 Singles. Rahman has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions over the years. 

 In 2010 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third in the list of civilian awards conferred by the Government of India. He also won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award in 2010 for his work in 6 in Delhi. The same film also won him the Best Music Direction Award at the Star Screen Awards. Her song Nana from the film Duet Retreat was nominated in the Best Original Song category at the 2010 Academy Awards.

 In 1992, Rahman began recording his own music and developed his own backyard studio called Panchnath Records Inn, India's most advanced recording studio. He initially did commercials in documentaries, among other projects. , composed music jingles for Indian television channels and music scores. In 1992, she was approached by film director Mani Ratnam to write the score and soundtrack for Ratnam's Tamil film Roja. Roja's score met with high sales and acclaim in both its original and dubbed versions, the film music at the time. A significant turnaround took place in 2006, and Rahman followed it up with successful scores for Tamil language films of the Chennai film industry including Ratnam's politically charged Bombay, Urbanization Kadhalan, Bharathiraja's Karutthhamma, Saxophonic Duet, Indira, and Romantic. The comedies Mr. Romeo and Love Bird, which garnered him a lot of attention. There were several successful scores for films including Dil Se and Percussive Taal. Sufi mysticism formed the basis of Chaiya Chaiya for the former and formed the composition of "Zikr" from his issue of the film Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero for which he made major orchestral and choral arrangements. In 2006, Rahman composed his own Launched its music label, KM Music. Its first release was his score for the film Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. Personal Life

 He is married to Sai Banu and has three children, Khadia, Rahima and Amin. Rahman is the uncle of musician G V Prakash Kumar, who is the son of Rahman's elder sister AR Rehana. He became an atheist as a result of childhood struggles, eventually converting in 1989 to Islam, the religion of his mother's family.

 He is very devoted to his mother. During the Oscar awards, he paid a tribute to her: "There is a Hindi conversation 'pas pas ma hai' which means that even if I have nothing, I have my mother here."Social Service

 Rahman is involved in various charitable causes. In 2004, he was appointed the global ambassador of the Stop TB Partnership, a project by the WHO. He has shown support to charities including Save the Children, India, and worked with Cat Stevens/Youssef Islam for their song "Indian Ocean". The song featured a keyboard player, Magne Furuholman, and Travis drummer, Neil Primrose. The proceeds of the song went to help orphans in Banda Aceh, one of the areas most affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. He produced the single "We Can Make It Better" by Don Asian with Mukhtar Sahota.

 In 2008, Rahman partnered his KM Music Conservatory with an audio media education facility to train and train aspiring musicians in instruments, music technology, and sound design. The conservatory – with prominent musicians on its panels and a newly established symphony orchestra – is located near its studio in Kodambakkam, Chennai, offering courses at the beginners, foundation and diploma levels. Rahman founded in Chennai in 2006 with the help of destitute women. I composed the theme music for a short film for The Banyan. In 2008, Rahman composed a song called "Jiya Se Jiya" with percussionist Shivamani, which was inspired by the Free Hugs campaign and promoted through a video shot in various cities in India.
