Mary Kom is an Indian boxer from the Kom tribal community in the north-eastern state of Manipur. Mary Kom was born on 1 March 1983 in Kangthai, Manipur, India. She was from a poor family, her father is Mangat Tanpa Kom, a former wrestler and her mother is Mangat Akham Kom, she has 3 siblings Chung, Ni, Jung. Mary Kom's parents used to cultivate jhum in Kangthai. Till 8th standard, she studied in village school and later shifted to Imphal in 9th and 10th standard. However, when she failed her exams she dropped out of school and decided to take her 10th exams privately. Mary Kom, graduated from Churachandpur College, Manipur, India (Manipur University). From her childhood, Mary Kom was good at the sport and finally, at the age of 15, inspired by Indian boxer Dingo Singh, she decided to take up boxing as her career. Mary Kom's father kept his distaste for boxing because he was worried that boxing would damage his face and spoil his marriage prospects. She is the only female boxer to have won a medal in each of the six World Championships and the World Amateur Boxing Championships 5 times.
Mary Kom is also ranked No. 4 in the AIBA World Women's Ranking Flyweight category. He has been honored with India's third highest civilian award- 'Padma Bhushan'. Apart from several awards and accolades, he has also been honored with national awards like 'Arjuna Award' and 'Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna'. On 26 April 2016, he was nominated by the President of India to the Rajya Sabha as a Member of Parliament. In March 2017, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, named him along with Indian boxer Akhil Kumar as the National Observer for Boxing.
